Jesse Millwood
Attala County, Mississippi

Jesse Millwood was born in South Carolina about 1817 (Possibly in Union or Spartanburg County).  Sometime prior to 1850 he migrated to Attala County, Mississippi where he met and married the first of his two wives, Elizabeth W. Smith.  Elizabeth was born in 1833 and was the daughter of James Smith and Mary Turner.

Shortly after their marriage Jesse and Elizabeth removed to Upshur County, Texas.  A son, David Hampton Millwood was born there in February 1850. When they returned to Attala County is not known.

David Millwood married Lousia Angeline Moore in Attala County around 1873 and they had seven children.  Some of their descendants still reside in Attala County.

Some time in the early part of the 1860's Elizabeth Smith Millwood passed away.  Jesse enlisted in the Confederate States Army in Canton, Madison County, Mississippi on July 30, 1862.  He served with Captain J. S. Smyth's Company of Partisan Rangers, Mississippi Volunteers.  On February 10, 1863 he was transferred to Canton Hospital in Canton, Mississippi for treatment.  Upon his recovery from his injuries or possibly an illness, he was returned to his unit for resumption of duty and was subsequently taken prisoner when his unit was captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi.  He signed an Oath of Allegiance on July 4, 1863 and was released from further military obligation.

Also, in the early 1860's Jesse Millwood married his second wife, Mary E. Allen.  Mary was born in either 1837 or 1838 in Mississippi.  For a time, Jesse and Mary resided in Attala County.  But by 1880 they had relocated to Yazoo County, Mississippi. Jesse and Mary are known to have had five children; Alezida/Alice, Nicey, Rebecca/Anna, James H. and John T.  There is a possibility that Mary E. Allen may be the daughter of Gabnet and Rebecca Allen who were in Attala County in 1850.

It is not known where or when Jesse Millwood and Mary Allen Millwood passed away or where they are buried.  Many of their descendants settled in Humphries and Holmes County, Mississippi.
