James Samuel McClellan was the oldest child of John Patton McClellan of South Carolina and Attala County, Mississippi. James was born in South Carolina and lived in Attala County from 1844-45 until about 1857 or 1858, when he and his family removed to Arkansas. His parents, John Patton McClellan and Mary Ann Glasgow McClellan and sisters remained in Attala County. Above photograph was taken ca. 1922.

James Samuel McClellan was a Confederate veteran and the grandfather of Senator John Little McClellan, of Sheridan, Arkansas. James was born in 1834 in South Carolina and died in 1930 in Arkansas. He and his wife, Hulda Scott Mathis McClellan had 8 children, two born in Attala County and the rest in Arkansas. James had 100 grandchildren and also great grandchildren at the time of his death. He is buried in Camp Creek Cemetery, east of Hurrican Creek and just north of present day Ain Community, Grant County, Arkansas. Photograph ca. 1925.
